For boxed set clients it is suggested to run the EQ2Emu Patch Utility. (I'm not sure if it's required for the live / current / streaming clients).
I have copied the information over to the wiki from this thread here.

This is being provided for some users that seem to need help transitioning between live and the EQ2Emu version. This program should be rather straight forward and has a setup process that you have to follow. If you have any questions or run into issues you can ask them here.

Edited by John Adams: 5/10/2011 We've switched to supporting this tool as part of our EQ2Emulator Core Utilities. See the details below for how to use this tool properly.
First, unpack the RAR file. You should have 4 files in the folder:
Run EQ2EMuPatcher.exe. On first launch, it will ask you where your EQ2 Dir is. If it does not, click the button "Change EQ2 Dir":
Browse to your Everquest II folder where the Everquest2.exe file is and select it. Then click Open. (In Windows 8 the directory is C:\Users\Public\Sony Online Entertainment\Installed Games\EverQuest II)
Pick which version you wish to patch to. By default, 5122L is selected.
Values include (Info taken from Xinux's forum signature ;p)
EQ II Original Build = 1360 Desert of Flames (DoF) Build = 1360 Kingdom of Sky (KoS) Build = 2654 Classic? Build = 3375 Echoes of Faydwer (EoF) Build = 3554 Rise of Kunark (RoK) Build = 4412 The Shadow Odyssey (TSO) Build - 5122 The Sundered Frontier (SF) Build = 6118 Destiny of Velious (DoV) Build - 7628 Age of Discovery Build (AoD) = 8295
If your Everquest2.exe does not match our version, you will be asked if you wish to patch that file.
A backup is always made, but you should ALWAYS back up your own files accordingly (specifically, Everquest2.exe in this case)
If patching was successful, you should see a screen like this:
Now run the Everquest2.exe or simply click the Play EQ2emu button from the patch utility to login to the server. There should not be any patching screen, you should be taken directly into the game login. If your game shows up with the sony patcher then it may be because you have clicked a shortcut link to the patcher instead of clicking on the Everquest2.exe program.
There may be additional client compatibility steps required to make your client work 100% properly. If you experience problems in game with the interface please check this wiki page for possible updates: Client Compatibility
